What’s New: Increasing Inclusivity in the Classroom

The Center for Teaching at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, has published a teacher guide entitled Increasing Inclusivity in the Classroom, by Andrew Greer, targeting educators working in higher education. The guide addresses two broad themes: student belonging and "stereotype threat." Students should feel as though they belong in classrooms and in campus culture. Students who identify with marginalized groups may perceive a postsecondary environment as unwelcoming. Teachers can support students by ensuring that the classroom environment feels inclusive to all.

Teachers wanting to encourage their students' sense of belonging in the classroom should consider the syllabus, course content, their own behaviour and assumptions, and their knowledge of students’ backgrounds and skills. Presenting positive role models who defy stereotypes can also encourage students to feel that they belong in a classroom or a field.
