What’s New: We Don’t DO Inclusion. Rather, We LIVE Inclusion

In the popular guidebook, Inclusion in Action, the author Nicole Eredics makes the distinction between “living inclusion” and “doing inclusion” in a learning environment.  A recent blog post featured on Brookespublishing.com highlights 26 quick tips from the Inclusion in Action book that can help schools create more inclusive classrooms. Some of the tips that are featured in this blog include:

In the classroom…

  • Ensure that shelving is appropriate for student reach.

  • Create learning centers such as a book nook, science station, or writing retreat

  • Provide different types of lighting in the room.

  • Group desks together to facilitate group interaction (when social distancing is not a factor).

In the front office…

  • Post a welcome sign in different languages.

  • Post a school event board to notify staff and community of upcoming events.

In the library…

  • Offer a reading club that is open to all students.

  • Create a “reading buddies” program.

  • Ensure that shelving and books are accessible.

On the playground…

  • Ensure that pathways to and around the playground are accessible.

  • Create quiet areas for students to read or chat.
