Celebrate Pink Shirt Day; Stop Bullying
Today, Pink Shirt Day is celebrated in communities across Canada. The origins of Pink Shirt Day started in 2007 in Nova Scotia, when a group of students saw a grade 9 student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school. To be supportive of this student and to show the bullying experienced by the student was not okay, they bought and wore pink shirts. After a few days, most of the students in the school were wearing pink shirts.
The Red Cross of Canada defines bullying as “a form of aggression where there is a power imbalance; the person doing the bullying has power over the person being victimized. In addition to any physical trauma incurred, bullying can result in serious emotional problems, including anxiety, low self-esteem, or depression.”
Types of bullying can be physical, verbal, social/relationship, and cyberbullying.
