What’s New: 13 Things Every New Inclusive Educator Should Remember

The blog Tips for New Inclusive Educators featured on Brookespublishing.com is a must read for any new or aspiring teacher. Thirteen overarching principles that every educator should embrace when teaching in an inclusive classroom are outlined in this blog and supported with practical strategies and resources. Some of the principles that are addressed include:

  • don’t prejudge a student’s competence

  • dismantle your “deficit lens”

  • establish collaborative communications with parents

  • acknowledge and respect cultural differences

  • look beyond life skills

  • embrace activity-based learning

  • make all things age-appropriate

  • challenge biases when interpreting behavior

  • remember you are EVERY student’s teacher

  • Ask yourself “Am I setting the stage for future success?”

  • Always make room for team collaboration

  • Make “all children can learn” your mantra

This blog also features links to inclusive education resources that correspond to each of the presented tips for educators. Some of the resources that are highlighted in this blog would be excellent resources to include in the teacher resource centres and libraries of a schoolboard and a Faculty of Education.
