What’s New: Words and Images Matter

The words and images that are used and the way information is presented can play a major role in shaping perceptions and attitudes. The portrayal of persons with disabilities can promote equality, inclusion, and full citizenship, or it can contribute to society’s negative stereotypes.

In an article featured in Abilities Magazine, Luke Anderson, founder of StopGap, advocates for empowered language and creating inclusive communities with what we say. Anderson states that “along with the media, the education system can actively play a role in championing empowering and inclusive language and focusing on the person, not the ability.”
