The article Why Diversity and Inclusion Matter in the Workplace is featured in the Washington Business Journal and is designed to initiate a discussion on diversity, inclusion and equality in the workplace and communities. As a starting point, the authors provide the following definitions of diversity, inclusion, and equity.

  • Diversity means your company has employees from a wide range of racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds with different lifestyles, experiences, and interests.

  • Inclusion means that your company has the policies and procedures to ensure all people feel welcome and that leaders and employees demonstrate behaviors that allow different perspectives, opinions, and experiences to be heard and recognized.

  • Equality means everyone has an equal chance at an opportunity, whether it is hiring, promotion or professional development trainings.

One of the key messages in this article is that hiring policies and practices are not enough. Corporate leaders must be able to demonstrate their commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity, and equity.
