Basketball and Accessibility Are a Slam Dunk
Buckets & Borders is a non-profit organization with a mission to improve communities and bring people together through basketball. Established in 2015 by brothers Justin and Brendan Lee, this organization has grown into a community of enthusiastic volunteers, supporters, donors, and partners. Throughout their travels across the globe, Brendan and Justin discovered that basketball was something that brought people together and united them, regardless of their age, ability, culture, religion and/or race. Buckets & Borders is rooted in the belief that having access to good outdoor basketball courts has a positive impact on a community. One of the revenue-generating strategies for Buckets & Borders is a line of activewear available from the shop on their website (it is really cool!).
Recently, Buckets & Borders revitalized landmark basketball courts in Regina’s Lakeview community. The transformation of these basketball courts — from cracked asphalt, uneven surfaces, and deteriorating meshes to a modern and accessible outdoor facility — has been viewed as a successful community engagement endeavour. An estimated 1,000 people attended the day-long festival held on September 12, 2021, to celebrate the opening of the new basketball courts.
