“Communicating inclusively also means considering how the way we communicate may include some and exclude others, and trying to communicate in a manner that reflects the diversity of our society.” This perspective is featured in the  introduction of a new guide to support legal professionals in their use of inclusive language published by The Law Society of British Columba. This resource was developed in consultation and collaboration with legal professionals and stakeholders working in the area of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

The guide is well written and address key topic areas including;

  • Why Using Inclusive Language Matters

  • What Using Inclusive Language Means

  • How Using Inclusive Language Works

The strategies featured in this guide are clear and practical. The authors encourage readers to provide comments and suggestions on how to keep the guide relevant and respectful. Although the guide is designed for lawyers, it is a resource that will be helpful to other professionals.
