What’s New: Inclusive Leadership in Education

Inclusive leadership is a crucial factor in efforts to improve education at local, regional and national levels.” This insight is the opening statement in the Inclusive Leadership Handbook developed by Childhood Education International.

The handbook begins with key definitions including “inclusive education” and the distinction between “equity” and “equality”. Inclusive leadership as defined in the handbook “appreciates diversity, invites and welcomes everyone’s individual contribution, and encourages full engagement with the processes of decision-making and shaping reality”.

The Inclusive Leadership Handbook identifies four key development areas for inclusive leadership including practicing self-awareness, living a shared vision, building relationships with colleagues and community members, and creating and managing change. The handbook concludes with a discussion on why inclusive practices are so important for education today.
