Become A Spark…Now is the Time

Every day we celebrate people who are a “spark” when it comes to championing diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.  What is a “spark”? In their book Spark, authors Angie Morgan, Courtney Lynch, and Sean Lynch, defines a “spark as people who recognize that they don’t have to accept what’s given to them. They can do things differently to create the change they’d like to see. Their actions can directly shape the future, and they can make things better.” To foster more workplaces. schools, and communities where everyone feels a sense of belonging more of us must become a “spark”.

From what I have experienced, learned, and witnessed people who authentically embrace diversity, equity and inclusion and create the change they’d like to see have four distinguishing traits. First, they have a clear vision of diversity, equity and inclusion, and this vision guides everything they do.  Second, they understand that equity and inclusion are a shared responsibility. Third, they are inclusive leaders who are brilliant at leveraging the diverse abilities, perspectives, and ideas of everyone to make things better. The fourth trait they recognize that it is an ongoing journey. There is no finish line.

To navigate and thrive in our ever-changing, increasingly diverse, and fast-paced world, we must become more responsive and adaptable than ever before. The changes needed must be rooted in championing diversity, equity, and inclusion in an authentic and intentional way. All of us have the capacity to become a “spark”.  What are you waiting for? Now is your time.
